Luma (Ludmilla) von Flesch-Brünningen was born in Brünn, the capital of Moravia, then part of the Austrian empire, now Brno in the Czech Republic. She was a pupil of Aloïs Schönn in Vienna, and travelled with Schönn to Italy and Africa. She then went to Munich to study under Frithjof Smith, settling there for the rest of her life. On her marriage, Luma von Flesch-Brünningen became Luma von Csúzy. She won a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900, and a medal of the third class in 1902; she also exhibited at the Munich Glaspalast.
