CHARLES COTTET – Au pays de la mer: douleur, 1908
Sheet size: 180 x 270 mm
Image size: 130 x 180 mm
Edition: c.1500 – Unsigned
Original etching and drypoint by Charles Cottet. Printed on laid paper. Published by the Gazette des Beaux Arts. This print is in excellent condition but it bears the very faint collection stamp of the previous owner, the Providence Athenaeum, in the image at the bottom left. The stamp is not at all noticeable; at first we missed it even though we were looking for it. Refs: Sanchez & Seydoux 1908-7; Morane 53. Also in 1908 Cottet etched a complete version of the painting (now in the Musée d'Orsay), of which this etching shows only the three grieving women. For this reason Morane titles this plate Douleur (fragment), or Trois figures de la douleur au pays de la mer. Condition: Excellent, see description.
