ROGER VIEILLARD – Fantaisie architecturale, 1978
Sheet size: 660 x 500 mm
Image size: 450 x 360 mm
Edition: 11 – Signed by artist
Original engraving by Roger Vieillard. Signed, titled, and monogrammed by the artist in pencil. A presentation copy from the artist to Mademoiselle Féquet and Monsieur Baudier, printers of the type for the portfolio Architectures, published by the artist in 1980 in an edition of just 11 copies, "à la demande d'un groupe d'amateurs". Printed on Moulin de Larroque handmade wove paper by l'atelier Georges Leblanc. This engraving is no. 605 in the catalogue raisonné by Guérin and Rault. This is state five out of six. Very confusingly, the artist has written état XIV in pencil below the title; there were only six states, and as this is plate XIV of the collection the number must refer to that; état XIV has been written by mistake instead of ép. col. (collaborator's proof). Also confusingly, even though the list of plates gives the title as Fantaisie architecturale, the title inscribed here is Décor pour le something something - the last two words are unreadable, but do not appear to be temps moderne, which is an alternative title for this engraving. The portfolio Architectures was limited to 11 copies, nine numbered and two artist's proofs. This out-of-series presentation copy (and presumably another presentation copy to Georges Leblanc) shows the existence of at least two further proofs. The nine numbered copies were numbered out of the original planned edition of 50. The title of this engraving is alternatively given as Décor pour les temps modernes, Décor architectural, Décor des temps modernes, Décor du temps moderne, Fantaisy architectural, or Monument impitoyable. Ref: Guérin and Rault 605 (state v/vi). Condition: Fine.
