ERNST KLOTZ –
Zigeunerknabe, 1895
Etching
Sheet size: 285 x 210 mm
Image size: 140 x 115 mm
Edition: Size of edition unknown; extremely scarce – Unsigned
Gypsy boy. Original colour etching by Ernst Klotz. Printed à la poupée by F. A. Brockhaus, Leipzig on cream laid paper. Published by E. A. Seemann for Zeitschrift für Bildende Kunst, Leipzig. Printed below the image are the words Malerradirung v. E. Klotz, and credits to the printer and publisher. There are some dirt marks in the wide margins, not affecting the etching in any way. We have only been able to trace 3 etchings by Klotz, all published in 1895 (the other two in the journal Pan); this is the only colour etching. In printing à la poupée, all the colours are worked into the etching plate - each with a separate muslin "dolly" - and printed at one go; this process has to be repeated for each impression. Condition: Very good, see description.
