GIOVANNI CARIANI (Italian / 1485-1547)

The painter Cariani was born Giovanni de' Busi at Fulpiano-sur-Brembo, and died in Venice. Many of Cariani's paintings were previously attributed to Bellini, Giorgione, Palma Vecchio and others, and it is only in the twentieth century that he has emerged as a truly significant figure of the sixteenth-century Venetian School.
