CAROLUS-DURAN (French / 1837-1917)

The realist painter Carolus-Duran was born Charles Émile Auguste Durand in Lille. After studies in Paris, Switzerland, Rome and Spain, Carolus-Duran made his debut at the Salon de Paris in 1866. With Ernest Meissonier and Puvis de Chavannes, Carolus-Duran founded the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, of which he became the President in 1898.
