JAMES CRAIG NICOLL (American / 1846-1918)

James Craig Nicoll was born in New York City. He was a pupil of Maurice F. H. de Haas and of Hendrik Dirk Kruseman van Elten. Nicoll was a founder of the American Watercolor Society, of which he became President. He was also Secretary of the National Academy of Design and Secretary of the New York Etching Club. Many of James Craig Nicoll's etchings show New York Harbor, scenes along the Atlantic coast. He died in Norwalk, Connecticut. Nicoll's date of birth is sometimes given as 1847; which is correct we are not certain.
