MARIUS BAUER (Dutch / 1867-1932)

Marius Alexander Jacques Bauer was born in La Haye, where he studied under Salomon van Witsen. Marius Bauer travelled widely in the Orient - in Egypt, Turkey, and India - and is noted above all as an Orientalist. Bauer was closely associated with the art dealer Vincent van Gogh (the painter Vincent's uncle, also known as Oom Cent), and designed his ex libris. There is a catalogue raisonné of his etchings, Marius Bauer, zijn etswerk, 1927.
