THOMAS COUTURE (French / 1815-1879)

Thomas Couture was born in Senlis (Oise). Couture was taught by Gros and then Delaroche; he won the Prix de Rome in 1837. He had a successful career as a history, genre, and portrait painter in the classical style. Among the pupils of Thomas Couture were Millet, Manet, and Puvis de Chavannes.
