ALFRED STEVENS (Belgian / 1823-1906)

Alfred Stevens was the greatest of the Belgian Impressionists. Stevens studied at the Beaux-Arts, Paris, under Navez, a disciple of David and Ingres. Stevens was influenced as a young painter by Henri Gervex, allying himself in style, and close friendship, with Édouard Manet. Stevens was also close to Degas, Berthe Morisot, and the writer Charles Baudelaire. As well as one original etching by Stevens and one interpretative etching after him, we have an etched portrait of Alfred Stevens by Edgar Chahine.
