JOZEF ISRAELS (Dutch /
1824-1911)
Jozef Israëls was a Dutch Realist - the Dutch equivalent of Millet. Like Millet, Israëls was particularly admired by Vincent Van Gogh. Born into a Jewish family in Groningen, Jozef Israëls had to struggle to realise his dream of becoming an artist. He was rewarded by huge recognition in his day, when he was compared to Rembrandt in stature.
