JOSHUA REYNOLDS (English / 1723-1792)

Devon-born Sir Joshua Reynolds was the most successful painter of his day - despised by rebels such as William Blake, but adored by his high-society patrons. With Thomas Gainsborough, Reynolds founded the Royal Academy, of which Reynolds was the first president. His closest artistic alliance was with Angelica Kauffmann.
