JEAN-BAPTISTE GREUZE (French /
1725-1805)
Born in Tournus, Jean-Baptiste Greuze studied in Lyon and Paris. Greuze first showed at the Salon of 1755, where he achieved huge acclaim. But his arrogant manner made enemies of his fellow-artists, and in 1769 the Académie refused his membership as a history painter, a crushing humiliation from which he never truly recovered. By the 1780s, the moralising art of Jean-Baptiste Greuze was rendered old-fashioned by the rise of Neoclassicism, and he died in poverty and neglect.
