AUGUSTE RODIN (French / 1840-1917)

François-René-Auguste Rodin was the greatest sculptor of his day. Rodin's pupils and mistresses included Gwen John, Camille Claudel, and Jeanne Bardey. As well as sculptures and drawings, Auguste Rodin made 13 highly skillful and innovative drypoints on copper, a technique he was taught by Alphonse Legros in England in 1881; Rodin and Legros first became friends as fellow-pupils in the drawing class of Horace Lecoq de Boisbaudran, See: Thorson, Rodin Graphics: A Catalogue Raisonné of Drypoints and Book Illustrations, 1975; Roger-Marx, Les Pointes Sèches de Rodin. 1909; Delteil, Le Peintre Graveur Illustré vol. 6, 1910; Lampert and Le Normand-Romain, Rodin: His Art and His Inspiration, 2006.
