HENRI HARPIGNIES (French /
1819-1916)
Henri Harpignies was born in Valenciennes. He studied with Jean Achard. Harpignies was a close friend of Corot (the two travelled to Italy together in 1860), and a key figure of the Barbizon School that paved the way for Impressionism. Harpignies had made most of his 45 etchings and drypoints between 1847 and 1853, only making 5 or 6 more, the last in 1874. Our two drypoints, published by the Gazette des Beaux-Arts in 1917 after the death of Henri Harpignies, were probably executed 60 or more years earlier.
