GIUSEPPE DE NITTIS (Italian /
1846-1884)
Born in Barletta, near Naples, Giuseppe de Nittis (Joseph de Nittis) decided to go to Paris to study art after a meeting with Desboutin in Florence. De Nittis studied under Gérôme and Meissonier. Degas befriended him and asked him to exhibit with the Impressionists. Giuseppe de Nittis is remembered today for the subtlety and freshness of his etchings and drypoints. All of his etchings were made in Paris between 1872 and 1878; a total of 52 plates are listed in Fioarani & Dinoia, De Nittis Incisore, 1999.
