GUSTAVE MOREAU (French /
1826-1898)
The great Symbolist painter Gustave Moreau was not himself a printmaker, apart from two youthful etchings (which some attribute to Moreau, but others consider works engraved by Berchère after Moreau's drawings), but he authorized around 20 etchings after his paintings. Moreau's significance in art is twofold - first as a great artist in his own right, and second as the teacher and mentor of the Fauves. See: P.-L. Mathieu, Gustave Moreau, 1976.
