MARIANO FORTUNY (Spanish /
1838-1874)
Mariano Fortuny Y Marsal studied in Barcelona and Rome before moving to Paris in 1866, where he secured a contract with Goupil, who published many of his etchings. Attracted by orientalist subjects ever since his first trip to Morocco in 1860, Fortuny was influenced by Delacroix, by Gérome, whose studio he frequented in Paris, and by Meissonier. See Baron-Davilliers, Fortuny, sa vie, son oeuvre; Ainaud de Lasarte & Ressort, Mariano Fortuny et ses amis français.
