EUGENE DELACROIX (French / 1798-1863)

One of the most important French Romantic painters, Eugène Delacroix was to inspire both the Impressionists and the Symbolists. Delacroix's painting The Death of Sardanapalus of 1827, now in the Louvre, inspired revulsion and disgust when first exhibited; our 1873 etching after the painting, sensitively done by Frédéric Regamey, marked an important stage in the painting's rehabilitation as one of Delacroix's masterworks.
