EDOUARD MANET (French /
1832-1883)
Édouard Manet is the pivotal figure between Realism and Impressionism. His work was profoundly influenced by Hals and Velázquez, as well as contemporaries such as Courbet, but also by the Impressionists, through his friend and sister-in-law Berthe Morisot. His painting Bon Bock (or Le Bon Bock, the Good Beer), which shows all these influences, was a surprise success at the Salon of 1873; our etching of this subject, delicately handled by Frédéric Regamey, one of Manet's greatest admirers, is contemporary with the painting.
