Henri Jacques Édouard Evenepoël was one of the most important Belgian artists of the nineteenth century. Evenepoël ws born in Nice, to Belgian parents. He commenced his studies at the Académie in Burssels, in the atelier of Blanc Gorin. At the Beaux-Arts, Paris, Evenepoël studied firstly with Galland, and then in the studio of Gustave Moreau, alongside Rouault and Matisse. Evenepoël's brilliant career was tragically cut short by typhoid fever at the age of 27. Our print shows the pronounced influence of Nabis artists such as Bonnard and Vuillard on the art of Henri Evenepoël. Henri Evenepoël was closely linked with the artists who would found Fauvism, especially Henri Matisse and Albert Marquet.
