JULES ALEXIS MUENIER (French /
1863-1942)
A contributor to L'Estampe Moderne. Genre-painter Jules-Alexis Muenier was born in Vésoul (Haute Saône)in 1863. He studied at the Beaux-Arts, Paris, under the orientalist, Gérome. Muenier subsequently bought Gérome's house in the village of Couvelon near Vésoul. Muenier's paintings were hugely successful in the academic Salons on the late nineteenth-century. The influence of Millet can be strongly felt in our print, The Return from the Fields, which no doubt depicts a daily scene in or around Couvelon.
