GEORGES ROUAULT (French /
1871-1958)
Georges Rouault was born in Paris. At the age of 14 he was apprenticed as a glass painter. In 1891 Rouault enrolled in the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, and studied under Gustave Moreau. While at the Beaux-Arts Georges Rouault became friendly with Matisse, Marquet, and Camoin, and became a member of the Fauves. The art of Georges Rouault is influenced both his early training as a glass painter (reflected in the heavy black outlines of his mature style), by the Symbolism of Moreau,
and by Van Gogh; in turn, he became a formative influence on the Expressionists.
