FELIX LABISSE (French /
1905-1982)
Félix Labisse was born in Marchiennes (Nord). He was a self-taught Surrealist, influenced by James Ensor (whom he knew in Ostend) in his early work. He exhibited at the Salon des Tuileries from 1944, was a member of the Salon d'Automne and a committee member of the Salon de Mai. Besides his painting, Labisse also designed for the stage. Félix Labisse is the subject of a recent study by various hands, Félix Labisse, 2005; a catologue of his oeuvre was published in 1996.
