WIFREDO LAM (Cuban/French /
1902-1982)
One of the leading Surrealists. Born in Cuba, Wifredo Lam spent most of his life in France, forging close friendships with artists such as Picasso and Masson, and writers such as Breton and Char. Wifredo Lam's Cuban grandmother was a Voodoo priestess, and this heritage makes Lam's incorporation of African elements in his work utterly authoritative. See: David, Wifredo Lam, 1991; Leiris, Wifredo Lam, 1970; Leiris et. al., Wifredo Lam, 1983; Sims, Wifredo Lam and the International Avant-Garde 1923-1982, 2002. The catalogue raisonné of Lam's prints is Tonneau-Ryckelynck, Wifredo Lam: Oeuvre gravé et lithographié, 1994.
