VICTOR VASARELY (Hungarian/French / 1908-1997)

Victor Vasarely was born Gyözö Vásárhelyi at Pécs, Hungary. He initially trained as a doctor, but abandoned medicine to become an artist, training at a Hungarian school modelled on the Bauhaus. Initially flirting with Cubism and Surrealism, Victor Vasarely developed his own style of geometric abstract art, and is regarded as the father of Op-art. The Fondation Vasarely in Aix-en-Provence was opened by President Pompidou in 1976; there are also Vasarely Museums in Pécs and in Budapest.
