MARIE RAYMOND (French / 1908-1989)

Marie Raymond was born at La Colle-sur-Loup in the Alpes-Maritimes. She attended the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Marie Raymond only began to exhibit in her late thirties, but soon became one of the most prominent French abstract artists of the post-war period; she was a close friend and associate of Nicolas de Staël. After her death Marie Raymond was honoured with a major retrospective at the Musée d’Art Moderne in Nice, in 1993. Marie Raymond was married to the Dutch equestrian painter Fréderic Klein. Their son, the painter Yves Klein, was to reject abstraction, partly no doubt in order to shrug off his mother’s influence.
