SERGE POLIAKOFF (Russian/French / 1900-1969)

Born in Moscow, Serge Poliakoff moved to Paris in 1923, supporting himself initially by playing the guitar. Poliakoff turned to painting in 1930, and attended various institutions, including the Slade in London from 1935-37. Serge Poliakoff began as a figurative painter, but turned to abstraction under the influence of his friends Kandinsky and Robert and Sonia Delaunay. His hugely successful career has continued after his death with a string of important retrospectives.
