CESAR DOMELA (Dutch / 1900-1993)

César Doméla was born in Amsterdam, the son of the founder of Holland's socialist movement. His real name wsa César Doméla-Nieuwenhuis. Doméla taught himself to paint, beginning with landscapes and still lives in an Expressionist manner. When Doméla moved to Paris in 1924 he encountered Cubists such as Henri Laurens and Georges Braque. Decisively, Doméla became friends with Mondrian, and joined the group De Stijl as its youngest member. The art of César Doméla is essentially Constructivist.
