Gustaaf De Smet (Gustave Franciscus De Smet) was born in Ghent in 1877. Initially influenced by Emile Claus and Luminism, Gustaaf De Smet became one of the leading Belgian Expressionists. He was closely associated with Constant Permeke and Frits Van den Berghe. Gustaaf De Smet died in Deurle in 1943, where his home is now a museum.
