HANS ERNI (Swiss / 1909-)

Hans Erni was born in Lucerne in 1909. Erni studied at the École des Arts et Métiers there, and then at the Académie Julian in Paris, though according to Claude Roy, "his real workshop was the Louvre". Before WWII Hans Erni formed artistic friendships with Arp, Brancusi, Calder, Kandinsky, Mondrian and Moore. Erni is a master of various kinds of printmaking, including etching and lithography. Our prints by Hans Erni include lithographs of animals, and a suite of etchings for a deluxe edition of the Metamorphoses of Ovid, which show a pronounced influence of both Picasso and Matisse. See: Claude Roy, Hans Erni, 1964; Charles Rosner, L'Oeuvre Graphique de Hans Erni, 1957; Pierre Cailler, Catalogue Raisonnée de l'Oeuvre Lithographié et Gravé de Hans Erni 1930-1970; J.-C.
