FRANCOIS DESNOYER (French / 1894-1972)

The painter and printmaker François Desnoyer was born in Montauban (Tarn-et-Garonne) in 1894. His first studies were made under Antoine Bourdelle, who was also from Montauban. In 1912 Desnoyer went to Paris to further his studies, but the Great War intervened. Desnoyer was called up to active service, and was seriously injured in 1917. In 1921 he returned to Paris to study at the École des Arts Décoratifs, where he was to become a professor in 1938. In the intervening years, Desnoyer balanced the life of artist and teacher. It was only in 1934, at the age of 40, that François Desnoyer made his mark in the art world, exhibiting at the Salon des Indépendants alongside Robert Lotiron, Édouard Goerg, and Marcel Gromaire. The art of Desnoyer was influenced by his admiration for Gauguin and Cézanne, and also by the Fauves. François Denoyer was particularly close to the Fauve artist Albert Marquet, and the two artists shared Matisse's former studio at 19, quai Saint-Michel. During the Second World War Desnoyer was active in the French Resistance, running a clandestine printing press from his studio. After the war, he settled in Sète on the south coast. At the Venice Biennale in 1952 François Desnoyer exhibited alongside Fernand Léger and Raoul Dufy, striking up a particular friendship with Dufy. A great colourist, François Desnoyer maintained that "all painting is at once figurative and abstract, because it is the manifestation of a temperament." François Desnoyer died in Saint Cyprien (Pyrénées-Orientales) in 1972. The Collection Desnoyer (originally Fondation Desnoyer) in Saint Cyprien holds a large part of the artist's work, and also stages exhibitions of contemporary art. There is also a road named after François Desnoyer in Sète.
