LOUIS-ROBERT ANTRAL (French /
1895-1940)
Louis-Robert Antral was both a painter and a printmaker, mainly of etchings. Antral contributed to the famous portfolio Paris 1937, alongside Matisse, Marquet, Dunoyer de Segonzac, Lotiron, Vlaminck, Derain, Friesz, Dufy, Moreau, Bonnard, Corneau, and Camoin. Louis-Robert Antral was a pupil of Fernand Cormon at the Beaux-Arts, Paris. Antral won the Croix-de-Guerre avec citation for his bravery in WWI. From 1920 he regularly exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants. Antral has often been compared with Marquet, and may be seen as one of the overlooked Fauves, albeit with a touch of Cubism in his compositional aesthetic. Louis-Robert Antral was particularly noted for his use of falling rain as a compositional device. See: Elder, Antral.
