CURTH G. BECKER (German / 1904-1972)

Curth Georg Becker was born in Singen in 1904, and died there in 1972. In 1923-24 he studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule Krefeld, where he was a member of Heinrich Campendonk's circle; from 1924-1928 he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Heinrich Nauen. A member of the Rheinischen Secession (and later the Darmstädter Sezession), he was banned from exhibiting from 1935-1943. The Nazis condemned his art as Degenerate, and removed his paintings from the Düsseldorf Museum of Art. There is a monograph on the life and art of Curth G. Becker by A. Sommer.
