GISELE CELAN-LESTRANGE (French / 1927-1992)

The printmaker Gisèle Celan-Lestrange was born and died in Paris. Born Gisèle de Lestrange, she studied at the Académie Julian from 1945-1949. In the 1950s she studied etching under Johnny Friedlaender. From 1964 she worked with the world-famous printing atelier of Lacourière-Frélaut. In 1952 Gisèle de Lestrange married the poet Paul Celan, adding his name to hers to become Gisèle Celan-Lestrange. There is a 2009 catalogue raisonné of her work by Ute and Klaus Bruckinger.
