CHARLES LEANDRE (French /
1862-1934)
A painter and lithographer, Charles Lucien Léandre was especially drawn to subjects from his native Normandy. He was born in Champsecret, Orne; there is a Musée Charles Léandre in Domfront, where he went to school. In 1878 Léandre studied under Alexandre Cabanel and Émile Blin. He became a successful portrait painter, and also contributed drawings and caricatures to satirical publications such as Le Rire. Léandre is particularly remembered for his lithographs of Montmartre subjects. A retrospective of Charles Léandre's lithographs was held in Paris in 1952.
