WILLIAM MERRITT CHASE (American / 1849-1916)

The American Impressionist WIlliam Merritt Chase was born in Williamsburg, Indiana, in 1849. After initial studies in America, Chase went to Europe to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Wagner and Piloty. There, he befriended other American artists including Frank Duveneck, with whom he travelled to Italy in 1877 in the company of John Henry Twachtman. The following year, Chase returned to America, where he became celebrated for his portraits, landscapes, and still lifes.
