JOHN CONSTABLE (English / 1776-1837)

Acknowledged as one of England's greatest painters, John Constable was born in East Bergholt, Suffolk. Many of his finest works record the landscape of Dedham Vale, his home territory. Alongside his large-scale landscape paintings, Constable produced many free oil sketches of cloud formations and landscapes. He is now regarded, along with J.M.W. Turner, as one of the most influential precursors of the Barbizon School and Impressionism.
