WILLIAM ADOLPHE BOUGUEREAU (French / 1825-1905)

William Adolphe Bouguereau was born in La Rochelle in 1825. He found fame as an academic painter of often mythological subjects, usually involving female nudity, but fell out of step with the art of his day, due to his staunch opposition to Impressionism. It would be wrong, however, to categorise Bouguereau as stubbornly conservative; he used his considerable influence to open up Parisian art institutions to women artists.
