ILJA EFIMOVICH REPIN (Russian / 1844-1930)

Ilya Efimovich Repin was born in the Ukraine in 1844. He studied in St Petersburg before going to Paris from 1873-1876. Although he met Manet and the Impressionists, Repin maintained a realistic style, and on his return to Russia specialised in history paintings and genre paintings. Repin was moved by the sufferings of the poor, and joined with Tolstoy to campaign for social justice and against the death penalty. After teaching at the St Petersburg Academy, Ilya Efimovich Repin retired to his estate in Kuokkala, Finland, where he lived from 1903. His name is various transliterated. The surname is sometimes given as Répine or Riepin.
