EMILE ANTOINE BOURDELLE (French / 1861-1929)

The sculptor and artist Émile Antoine Bourdelle, usually known as Antoine Bourdelle, was born in 1861 in Montauban (Tarn-et-Garonne), and died in 1929 at Vésinet (Yvelines). Bourdelle came from a humble background, but he learned the handskills of a sculptor from his cabinet-maker father and stonemason uncle. After studies at the Beaux-Arts in Toulouse, in 1884 he won a bursary to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Alexandre Falguière and Jules Dalou. Antoine Bourdelle became a highly successful and influential sculptor. His Paris studio is now the Musée Bourdelle, devoted to his work and his personal art collection. There is also a second collection of his sculptures in the garden-museum at Égreville.
