JEAN BENNER (French / 1836-1909)

The painter Jean Benner is sometimes known as Jean Benner le Jeune to distinguish him from his father, Jean Benner l'Ancien (1796-1849). The whole family were artists. Jean Benner le Jeune's twin brother Emmanuel Benner was a painter, as was Jean's son Emmanuel Michel Benner, who got round the confusion of names by calling himself Many Benner. Our Jean Benner was born in Mulhouse (Haut-Rhin) in 1836, and died in Paris in 1909. He made his debut at the Salon de Paris in 1857. Jean Benner is especially known for his paintings of the island of Capri, where his son Many was born.
