LEON COMERRE (French / 1850-1916)

Léon François Comerre was born in 1850 in Trélon (Nord), and died in Paris in 1916. Léon Comerre studied under Colas in Lille, and then in the atelier of Alexandre Cabanel at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris. He won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1875. Comerre specialised in genre subjects, nudes, and portraits. Like many of Cabanel's pupils he remained rooted in the academic principles of the Salon de Paris, where he exhibited from 1875.
