JOAN MITCHELL (American /
1925-1992)
A major Abstract Expressionist, Joan Mitchell was born in Chicago in 1925. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. After a short marriage to the publisher Barney Rosset, she joined the Canadian painter Jean-Paul Riopelle in France, where the two settled (in separate but intimately-entwined establishments) in Vétheuil, near Giverny. She said, "I paint from remembered landscapes that I carry with me - and remembered feelings of them, which of course become transformed. I could certainly never mirror nature."
