WILLIAM ROTHENSTEIN (English / 1872-1945)

William Rothenstein was born in Bradford in 1872, of German-Jewish parentage. Rothenstein studied at the Slade School of Art; among his teachers was Alphonse Legros. He also studied at the Académie Julian in Paris, where he knew Degas, Pissarro, and Toulouse-Lautrec. William Rothenstein was an Official War Artist in both World Wars, and was Principal of the Royal College of Art from 1920-1935.
