LOURDES CASTRO (Portuguese / 1930-)

Lourdes Castro was born in Funchal on the island of Madeira in 1930. After studying at the School of Fine Arts in Lisbon, she moved first to Berlin and then in 1958 to Paris, with her husband, the artist René Bertholo. Taking part in many group and solo exhibitions, Lourdes Castro has been a prolific artist undaunted by new technologies, working as painter, printmaker, installation artist, video artist, and orchestrator of multimedia environments. With René Bertholo, Lourdes Castro founded the KWY group (and associated art revue). The KWY artists included Christo, Jan Voss, José Escada. Associated with Nouvelle Réalisme and Pop Art, Lourdes Castro, is best-known for her silhouette works, known as Ombres. Since 1983 Lourdes Castro has lived in her birthplace of Madeira.
