AVNI ARBAS (Turkish /
1919-2003)
Avni Arbas was born in Istanbul. He attended the Istanbul Beaux-Arts when Léopold-Lévy was the director. Avni Arbas was probably the most important Turkish artist of the twentieth century, though he spent 40 years in Paris, having gone there on a year’s full scholarship from the French government. He said, “I never thought about what I was going to do in life, I had to become an artist.” Avni Arbas died in Izmir.
