CHRISTO (Bulgarian / 1935-)

Christo, famous for his site-specific collaborative projects with his wife Jeanne-Claude, which involved "wrapping" buildings and natural features, including the Reichstag and 11 islands in Miami's Biscayne Bay, was born in Gabrovo, Bulgaria. His original name was Christo Vladimirov Javacheff. Christo studied in Sofia and Prague, before stowing away on a train in 1957 to flee communist Czechoslovakia for Austria. In Paris the following year he met Jeanne-Claude, discovering that they were both born on exactly the same day, June 13, 1935. Jeanne-Claude died in 2009, but work continues on their joint projects.
