FERNAND AUGUSTE BESNIER (French / ?-1927)

The painter and printmaker Fernand Auguste Besnier was born in Orléans, and died in Saint-Cyr-l'École, Fernand Besnier first appears as an illustrator in the 1880s, supplying etchings to risqué publications such as Monstres Parisiens (1883) and Tous les Baisers (1884), and drawings to Pour lire au bain (1884). He worked in an Art Nouveau or post-Impressionist style. Oil paintings by Besnier from a similar date turn up at auction (for instance a Jeune femme au café of 1886 sold at Berne in 1976), but he is not recorded as exhibiting his paintings until 1912, when he showed at the Salon des Indépendants. Fernand Auguste Besnier continued exhibiting with the Indépendants until his death.
