EDWARD ARDIZZONE (British /
1900-1979)
Edward Jeffrey Irving Ardizzone was born in Haiphong, Tonkin, in French Indochina. Although Ardizzone is often thought of as one of the most English of artists, his father was born in Algeria, of Italian descent. Ardizzone is remembered particularly for his watercolours and lithographs of London life, often depicting scenes in his beloved Maida Vale, as well as for his many children's books and for his work as a war artist in WWII. Edward Ardizzone was elected R.A. in 1970.
